With spring just around the corner, many fun-filled emotions pop up just as fast as my Lilies and Lilacs. But for a lot of golfers, both experts and hacks, this means they will be washing the dust off their golf clubs and practicing their swing to perfection – or something perceived to be close to perfect.
No one, except for Ben Hogan, has or had a flawless swing. If you’ve seen vintage footage of Hogan swinging the golf club you’d agree. His classic swing oozed with smoothness.
Even the GOAT – Jack Nicklaus – was not perfect on the golf course. Everyone makes mistakes. You and me both have flaws on the links. And the same applies when you talk about sin. It’s everywhere. No one can escape it. You will make moral mistakes in life. But when you know Jesus Christ – you know He is perfect and can wash away your sins with grace and forgiveness.
Just ask Stewart Cink how he feels about God’s mercy in his life. Stewart is a fan-favorite and a major winner on Tour. But he also has the blood of Christ applied to his life because he was sick of sin and knew his shortcomings did not do him any good. “That’s when you realize those flaws to a point where you start looking for something to make up for those shortcomings,” he told me. “For me, Jesus Christ is the answer for any questions of shortcomings I have. He’s the answer for everything. I cannot do this by myself . . . I just can’t.”
Stewart knows he’s not perfect and will make mistakes. He just knows the One who can make all things new. You can read more about Stewart and other golf professionals and their faith in Birdies, Bogeys & Blessings: 30 Days of Devotions for the Godly Golfer by me and from Iron Stream Media.
